xxoblivionalicexx asked: I've always wanted to buy one of your tails off your etsy shop because they're all so beautiful. A wolf tail would be perfect, but unfortunately not legal in my state. The thought of substituting with a fox or coyote tail has crossed my mind, but seeing as how I don't identify with fox or coyote, it seems like that would be almost...disrespectful? I'm not sure exactly how to word it, but I would like your opinion on the matter.
So here’s my experience with substitutions over the years. I find that most critter bits of one species are okay with substituting for those of another, IF some nod is made to the original species. So if you’re going to get a coyote tail to substitute for wolf, at least have some small thing for coyote in your home—a picture, a small statue, etc. And talk to the spirit in the tail some, too, to see if it has any specific requests.
There have been situations where I’ve had the original skin spirit ask to be removed from the fur/etc. it’s been inhabiting so it can move on to something different. The fur/etc. would then sometimes be occupied by another spirit that decided to move in. So that may be an option as well, though it has to be a voluntary leaving on the part of the original spirit; yanking spirits out of their homes is a bad idea.
If you want to know more about my dead critter work, here are links to some writings I’ve done.
