Oneday I will return my crystals to the rich earth and the rivers. We must start feeling our crystals with our hearts in order to communicate. Before I take a crystal from the earth that I’ve found, I’ll hold it in my palm and ask for permission. Usually I get a yes, but sometimes I get a no and I’m willing to accept my answer. The Earth’s energy is changing, Mother Earth is transforming just as we are, and there are certain crystals that desire to return to the natural earth so that they can energize and coexist with Gaia. You can feel when it is time for your beloved crystals to return, you will feel that they have served their purpose in your life and that it is time to part.
Crystals, when buried in the earth amplify the love and light sent out by all beings, and when placed in a river or ocean, are able to absorb and cleanse the energies the water has collected from far away. The energy from a crystal exists and heals on many different dimensions and levels of consciousness at once, so even if it’s small it’s still contributing significantly.
I’ve started releasing my crystals from my possesion and placing them back into the earth. I buried one on top of a mountain I climbed and I’ve put a few in rivers and streams. It is a satisfying feeling, knowing that you are returning something you’ve payed money for so that it can magnify the increasing light on Mother Earth.
We are all attracted to these beautiful stones, we want their healing energies and their beautiful colours. This attraction is an ancient memory encoded deep within our souls, but we have forgotten to really respect the consciousness of the crystal kingdom. As the Earths vibrations increase, more and more people will start returning crystals to the Earth. It is within the nature of spirit to give, to help, to selflessly serve, just as it is the nature of the crystal to do the same for us.

Didn’t someone rant a great rant about how wasteful that is? I want to think so, but I don’t feel like searching through 6k notes for it. Why don’t you just pass them down to someone who doesn’t have the money to buy them and needs them? I mean, really.
i think the whole point of what she was saying was that these crystals have a will of their own. they once came from their mother and they want to be returned to her loving care. to ignore them, would just cause grief to you. they want to go home. :/
if someone wants a crystal they should get their own ones. because a crystal can connect to their original owner. they should bond with their own person, not someone elses.
I strongly disagree.
Also disagree, and I’ll chime in why:
It has it own’s path. None of us choose it. If the damn thing tells you to put it in a river, then do it. But you’re not a stone, crystal, or other mineral. You’re a human being. You don’t make that choice for it. It’ll tell you when it wants to go.
We’ve all had stones magically disappear on us. Never to be found again, or found years later in place they couldn’t possibly be.
If you’re involved with them as mindfully as we all try to be, it is not your choice to toss them away because it returns them to the earth. That’s like someone picking my ass up and dropping me in another state, because that’s still the earth.
Crystals, like everything else, have a natural journey to follow. Do not get in the way of it. I’m not saying some aren’t meant to find their way to rivers, but they know their path, and they’ll tell it to you. Follow their instructions (be it passing them on, giving them away, putting them somewhere specific on the planet, whatever).
I was given a true, natural Morion quartz cluster bigger than my hand by a friend who was given the stone who was given it by someone who got it from a thrift shop. Neither of them work with stones beyond my friend saying “it’s loud, and it feels like you’re supposed to have it” (and her friend simply saying “it’s pretty but fuck it, I don’t want it anymore). This quartz is not only something I could only dream of affording right now, but it is, very much, mine, just as I in turn belong to it. But eventually, for whatever reason, it’s going to move on. And I’m going to respect that and let it continue on it’s path, whatever the hell that is (which means handing it down for free despite how much it’s worth, or letting it go it’s merry fucking way however it decides for that to be).
Once again, I am ALL FOR ANYTHING being put WHERE EVER IT feels is right. But it is not for you to decide. You are it’s keeper. Do your damn job.
End really ridiculous hippie rant on my part, and I apologize profusely for being passionate and therefore a dick about it.
That was my rant, mentioned a few comments up, about how wasteful it is to throw crystals into a lake. I can’t find it, either, but I found a post I wrote on my Therioshamanism blog last year about it, and I’ll comment again here with further thoughts.
We don’t know anything spiritual is real for absolutely sure. We can’t measure or record what a crystal says to us in our minds/hearts/etc. It’s wholly subjective until someone has incontrovertible evidence—not conjecture, not confirmation bias. Even I know that my work with the spirits in animal remains is subjective, and there’s a chance that it—like everything else of a spiritual nature—does not extend beyond my own head.
But what I DO know for absolutely sure and true is that most commercially available crystals are ripped from the ground in unsustainable and horribly polluting manners. Even “you-pick” crystal fields are still formerly wild places now overrun by touristing humans out to find a few shinies in the sun.
And I know that we can reduce the demand for newly torn-out crystals by recycling ones that were already torn out some time ago and that someone else no longer needs. If you pass three quartz crystals on to someone who is actively looking for them, that’s three fewer that need to be mined (or at least one less purchase fueling the overall demand).
Even as a shaman and pagan for over a decade, as an author and whatever other importance you want to put to that, as someone who has worked extensively with spirits for fifteen years—even as those things, I will ALWAYS err on the side of going with what is measurable and what I can put my finger on. Which means I don’t give a fuck how much I may think that stone may be screaming at me to toss it into a big lake. My common sense says “That’s a waste of resources, and I will NOT contribute to the casual manner in which materialistic Western society promotes everyday waste”. I’ve operated in that way for this long, and haven’t ever regretted it, and I doubt that I will.
I should add that I apply the same practices to my work with animal parts. If, for example, a spirit in a tanned hide says it wants to go back to the earth, I refuse and offer it other options, because I don’t want the residues from the tanning chemicals going into the soil or water.
Sometimes we have to tell the spirits to suck it up. We can’t let ourselves be terrorized into doing stupid shit by the fear some angry spirit will ruin our lives. We are powerful beings, too, and I think sometimes people give the spirits more credit than they really deserve. Like this week—some people would look at how $1000+ of my art and books got stolen, and how a very important package I was waiting for ended up on this derailed train and is likely destroyed. Some people who say “Ohhhhhh, that’s proof the SPIRITS ARE ANGRY!!!!! You must PLACATE THEM!!!!” Bullshit. It’s proof that A) I needed to keep a closer eye on my stuff while offloading for a show, and B) there are some defective train tracks in Montana. If a spirit is pissy with me they’ll tell me directly, not in some passive-aggressive haunty manner. That’s part of being a shaman—not needing to have books fly off the shelves on their own to get my attention.
And the other part of being a shaman? Being a force in and of my own right. I’m not the biggest, baddest thing in the Universe—but you know what? I’m also not a volcano. Or a tectonic plate. Or the Gulf Stream. Those might give me some clout on this planet, at least. Still, in my own ecosystem, I like to think that fifteen years of this stuff has given me enough experience and strength to not be pushed around by any spiritual being just because it’s a spirit. I am a caretaker of spirits, but I’m also a caretaker of the physical world, too, and part of my responsibility is knowing when to favor the physical.
