I discovered neopaganism in the mid-1990s, and shortly thereafter began my work with animal totems and neoshamanism. Over the years I've wandered through various paths, ranging from Wicca-flavored neopaganism to Chaos magic, but for the past few years I've been creating Therioshamanism, a post-industrial neo-shamanic path. I've also been creating various neopagan ritual tools and other sacred art from hides, bones, beads and other such things since about the same time. And I've written several nonfiction books on totemism, animal magic, and related topics. Currently working on "New Paths to Plant and Fungus Totems".

So that at least somebody gets something good out of the kerfuffle that resulted from me posting this (just read the notes—you’ll see what happened), I am doing a giveaway! Since Skin Spirits: The Spiritual and Magical Uses of Animal Parts raised a bit of controversy today, I’d like to give at least one more person in the world the opportunity to see what I actually said in there about working with the spirits in animal skins and other remains. (SPOILER ALERT: All I did was figure out while I was making stuff out of hides and bones that there were spirits in there, and I started talking with them—free-range, organic animism in the making.) So I’m giving away one copy of the book, free of charge, and I’ll even pay for the shipping. (And yes, of course I’ll sign it!) So if you want a chance to win this book, all you have to do is reblog (NOT JUST LIKE) this post. That’s it. You don’t even have to follow me, though I greatly appreciate follows. I’ll keep track of everyone who reblogs this between now and midnight on May 1 (the midnight when April 30 turns into May 1), then put all the names into a hat and draw one winner out.  ……aaaaaaaaaand GO! I am macerating a find right now. Would like to hear further insights into your own techniques. I actually don’t do a lot of maceration myself, mainly because I live in a tiny apartment with no yard and a porch covered in container garden (I have a couple tiny skulls in the garden, but I’m letting the resident ants take care of those). However, the main debate I’ve heard is whether temperature or movement is the key to quicker maceration—some say that the water needs to be kept above a certain temperature and so you keep an aquarium thermometer in it. Others maintain that keeping the water moving is the main factor at hand, and so they put an aquarium pump in there. I haven’t tried either, but I think it’s a worthy experiment.
